How am I? http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/how-am-i/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-am-i http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/how-am-i/#respond Thu, 10 May 2012 21:26:12 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1568 The next time you meet someone, do not ask “How are you”? Instead, ask “How am I”? Even if you don’t ask it aloud, ask this question inside. The moment you ask this, you have already turned the focus of your awareness inwards. Normally, we are always judging others in an unconscious manner even while we are interacting with them. A subtle process of judging and evaluating is always present as an undercurrent whenever we are relating with others. With this question – you turn the process upon yourself instead, and you will be doing it with full awareness. When you are aware, there is no space for judgment. You simply note your own motives and behavior, that is all. Once a certain behavior has come under the light of your awareness, it will be automatically strengthened if it is in tune with your being and dropped if it isn’t. We usually look for reasons and throw the responsibility outside ourselves for whatever happens in our relationships. With this question, you consciously realize that the responsibility of this interaction rests within you. You return to the only point from which any transformation is possible.

hutterstock_175641281.jpg” alt=”” width=”160″ height=”160″ />This 21 minutes meditation technique helps balance our active and passive energies so that our functioning becomes more centered and harmonious. When we are involved in any active, analytical or logical activity, our right brain is stimulated. This is the active or ‘solar’ aspect of the brain. When we are in a mood for listening to music or poetry, it is our left brain which is at work. This is the passive or ‘lunar’ aspect. Most of us overuse one part of the brain than the others. As a result, our energies are in a state of imbalance.

Instructions

Sit silently with your eyes closed. For a few minutes, press your fingertips upon your closed eyelids till you start seeing a light inside your closed eyes. Don’t hurt the eyes too much. Just witness whatever you are seeing inside. Seeing a bright light inside is a good sign. This light is known as bindu. It means that the life-force is intensely present in your body. Now relax the eyes for 3 minutes. Repeat the process. This technique will balance the energies in both sides of your brain.

Serving Without Self http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/serving-without-self/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=serving-without-self http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/serving-without-self/#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 21:01:02 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1492

Our entire personality runs on fear and greed. Whatever we do, we need to be motivated either by fear or greed! For example, to do our work at the office, we need to be pushed by either the desire to earn money, or the fear of losing our job. Of course, it is usually a mix of both! We are so used to moving our body only with either a reward or a punishment in mind, we have forgotten how to do anything for the pure joy of it. As long as we are swinging between fear and greed, we can never enjoy anything for its own sake. We think, how is it possible to work without any motivation? Understand that when we go beyond fear and greed, we start working out of inspiration! Instead of motivation, we run on inspiration. We start acting from our being. Selfless service does not mean making some big sacrifices, it only means serving without self, without the goal-oriented ego getting involved. When this happens, not only will we become more productive, your work becomes effortless and the joy of the work becomes its own reward.

Instructions

It is difficult to suddenly get into the mood of serving selflessly, especially at the office! So just try this simple technique in the beginning. Just for half an hour a day, offer your services in some place where you don’t get any monetary benefit or name and fame. Choose a place where you cannot show your arrogance and ego, where you don’t have to establish yourself as a great person. Do some small social service without any expectation whatsoever. Especially, do something where your body is involved – do physical labour. It is very easy to give money to a charitable cause, fairly easy to offer intellectual support – but very difficult to bend the body! And don’t have the idea that you are doing some great social service!
Actually you are doing only a personal service – to yourself. This is your sadhana – your spiritual practice. Till now, your attention has always been on the object of the work – the goal, the end result. Now, shift your attention to the experience itself. Take responsibility for the work you are doing – but not a responsibility based on fear or greed. Do whatever you are doing simply because it has to be done. When you work like this, you will find that you can take up much more responsibility without feeling the load. Understand, the work itself is never the load, it is always your expectations and fears which make it a load!
When you work like this, suddenly you will see that your body and mind can run without the fuel of fear and greed. It is a tremendous liberation! A new centre will be awakened in you. A new energy will start radiating in you. Just try this for 10 days and you will experience an expansion like you have never imagined. Once you experience the joy of serving without self, naturally it becomes your way of life.

Question the Answer http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/question-the-answer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=question-the-answer http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/question-the-answer/#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 20:46:40 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1499 Strictly speaking, this is not a meditation, but a very interesting game that can be played between two people.  This little game show us how our responses to life are always conditioned, and we rarely act out of spontaneity and awareness. It gives us a chance to really catch our mental patterns at work, and try to break free of them.

Instructions

Both participants take turns at asking each other simple questions like, “What is your name?” or “Isn’t it hot today?”. The way to reply is to make any statement that is NOT the logical answer to that question! For instance, if the questioner asks “What is your name?”, the person who answers can say something like “The flowers in the garden are so pretty!”, or “The day after tomorrow is Tuesday!”. You can say anything except answer the question. When you start playing, you will realize how difficult this is! It is almost impossible to maintain our awareness level higher than our logic. Again and again, we keep making the standard response. When our can sustain our awareness in every moment, we can move beyond logic. This game is a good way to break the mind, and to sharpen awareness as well.

Rooted in the Being http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/rooted-in-the-being/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rooted-in-the-being http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/rooted-in-the-being/#comments Thu, 10 May 2012 20:37:01 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1482 The swadishthana chakra (navel energy center) is the source of our life-force. That is why any energy blockage in this chakra manifests as fear. Likewise, constantly experiencing fear can cause the energy flow in this chakra to get blocked. This chakra is located right in the middle of the body. The very word ‘swadishthana’ means the point where the being is rooted. Just becoming aware of this chakra is enough to center your energies. When your awareness is centered on the swadishthana chakra, you are living at the being level.

Instructions

Whenever you can, become aware of the swadishthana chakra. As you look deeply, you will see that the whole of your life energy is revolving around this center. When your energy is centered on the swadishthana, you will see you cannot think much. Your thought-process will slow down naturally. You will feel more rooted and a natural discipline will arise in you, both in your physical actions and in your way of thinking. You will experience a deep and silent awareness and the courage to handle all your day-to-day problems without getting ruffled.

Don’t Like It? Don’t Do It! http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/don%e2%80%99t-like-it-don%e2%80%99t-do-it/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=don%25e2%2580%2599t-like-it-don%25e2%2580%2599t-do-it http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/don%e2%80%99t-like-it-don%e2%80%99t-do-it/#respond Thu, 10 May 2012 20:31:36 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1546

How many of the things you do every day you really enjoy? Forget about going to work or paying bills – even the things that you do for pleasure, you hardly ever enjoy. When you are eating, are you really enjoying it? Even when you go for a walk, are you totally into it?  Most of the time you are just hurrying through your actions without stopping to think whether this is what you really want to be doing. That is why there is so much conflict inside us. When you are doing something you really enjoy, you are connecting to your being – because all joy comes from the being.

Instructions

Right in the middle of whatever you are doing, just stop and ask yourself, “Do I really want to be doing this? Am I really enjoying myself?”  If you find that you are not, just stop whatever it is.  Just drop it. If you are really enjoying it, you won’t even need to answer yourself – you will know.  Just for 48 hours, try this technique.  In 48 hours, you are not going to lose everything!  Whatever you lose in 48 hours, is anyway not worth keeping.  In 48 hours, our life won’t come crashing down just because you stop doing the things you don’t enjoy.  But in that short time, you will surely get a taste of what it is to be totally integrated, totally at ease.  Understand, you cannot practice this technique unless you are aware of your actions at every moment. You have to be a constant witness. You cannot get carried away.  When you learn to stand apart and enjoy the action, that is real enjoyment – without attachment and fear. Then you see clearly that the joy is coming from the being, not from the action itself.  When you move away from the action and focus on the inner experience, you move deeper into your own being. Your actions are aligned to your being. You become integrated.

Beam of Energy http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/beam-of-energy/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=beam-of-energy http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/beam-of-energy/#respond Thu, 10 May 2012 20:25:44 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1542 You will be amazed to see how much can happen when you are just standing!  Wherever you happen to be at the moment, just try standing still in silence, without doing anything for a while. Close your eyes and and try to stand without support when your eyes are closed.

Instructions

Stand in a relaxed, comfortable way with your spine upright. Standing upright is not strenuous as you think. When your head, neck, spine and legs fall in a straight line, your body will be in a state of perfect balance. This is a posture of alertness combined with ease.  Standing is a beautiful way to let the energy flow smoothly in your body. And slowly your thoughts also come to a standstill.  Just stand as long as you can – even an hour is wonderful.  As the energy settles inside, you become silent and still. When you are totally centered, your body disappears and you become a beam of still and radiant energy.

Observe Again and Again http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/observe-again-and-again/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=observe-again-and-again http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/observe-again-and-again/#respond Thu, 10 May 2012 20:19:13 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1510 This is also a witnessing meditation.  Whenever a sudden emotion rises, just notice it silently.  It could be fear, or anger or desire. Just be completely conscious when it arises, and note: desire, desire, desire, desire. That’s all.  Don’t try to change the emotion. Don’t try to escape from it.  Just witness it consciously.  This simple act can throw such a beam of awareness on the emotion, it will be impossible for the emotion to sustain itself before it.  Understand, any emotion can overwhelm you only when you are unconscious, unaware.  The moment you take note of it without getting involved, you stand apart from it.  Just naming it creates a distance between the emotion and you.  You clearly experience that your emotion is not you.  Without your unconscious support, the emotion loses its charge.

Switch Off! http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/switch-off/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=switch-off http://meditationisforyou.org/2012/05/switch-off/#respond Thu, 10 May 2012 20:14:47 +0000 http://meditationisforyou.org/?p=1521 Normally we try to find a reason for our emotions, we try to understand our moods rationally. When you try to solve something as transient as your mood, you are giving a reality and significance to something that doesn’t really have.  Understand, most of your problems are just meaningless inner chatter!  All you need to do is just switch them off.  You will be surprised to see how easy it is to switch off the mind.  Switching off the mind doesn’t mean becoming insensitive to the situation, it just means giving your natural intelligence some breathing space, so that the right response can arise.  Once you learn the art of switching off your mind, you can never be overwhelmed by any external situation.

Instructions

Next time you experience an emotional outburst, don’t focus on the reason.  Just tell yourself quietly and very firmly to switch it off.  Don’t try to reason with yourself or find excuses for your behavior.  There is no point in getting angry with yourself because you are angry, or feel bad because you are depressed.  You will be shocked, once you decide to switch it off, the mood just disappears for a few minutes. Straightaway you will fall into a gap, a serene silence.  Instantly you are out of the mood and back in your center.  Now you may ask, what if the emotion comes up again after a while? If it does, just repeat the instruction.  Each time you taste this silence, when you see that you can call up this silence at will, you will lose the respect you have for the games of your mind. You will just feel like laughing at your own moods.  When you learn the art of switching off, you can remain centered in the middle of the most heated argument or the worst mood swing. Nothing can overpower you for long.
